Answers to Common Questions About Starting Therapy

How does therapy work?

I believe therapy works by creating a safe, trusting space where clients can explore and understand the deeper, often unconscious, factors that influence their current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By examining past experiences, early relationships, and underlying beliefs, we can uncover the root causes of ongoing emotional struggles. Armed with this insight, we work together to heal unresolved wounds, transform unhealthy patterns, and develop more adaptive ways of being so you can live with authenticity and purpose.

At the heart of this work is the therapeutic relationship itself, which provides a secure foundation for growth, allowing you to explore difficult emotions and experiences with non-judgmental support and empathy. I believe therapy is most effective when it’s a collaborative journey, where you and I work together to understand your unique experiences and develop strategies for lasting emotional growth and healing.

How do I find the right fit therapist for me?

Finding the right therapist is a deeply personal process. It is important to find someone who is a good fit because the quality of the relationship with your therapist can significantly impact your progress. Your therapist should be someone who helps you safe to open up to about your personal struggles so that you feel seen and understood, even at your most vulnerable. Trust and openness in the therapeutic relationship are essential for developing insight and healing.

To help you get a sense of what it’s like to work with me, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to answer your questions and see if we would be a good fit to work together. Click here to request a free consultation.

What can I expect from our first session?

The first session with a new therapist is all about establishing a connection to build a safe, trusting environment for the therapeutic work to take place. I usually ask questions about your personal history, current challenges and symptoms to get a better idea of how they are impacting you. This session is all about getting comfortable with each other, demystifying the process of therapy, and laying the important relational groundwork for your healing journey.

In-person or online: is one better than the other?

I see clients both in person at my office in Louisville, Colorado off of US-36 and McCaslin Boulevard, and online via SimplePractice telehealth. While each modality comes with its own pros and cons, both are proven to be effective. The format often comes down to what is useful and preferred for the client. For example, in-person therapy offers wonderful opportunities for attunement, connection, and focus, while some people prefer the convenience of telehealth. I am happy to talk through each option as well as your specific needs to help you decide which is the best fit for you.

How much does it cost?

My hourly rate for self-pay clients is $130 per session. I offer a limited number of reduced fee slots for clients in need of more affordable care. Please reach out for more information.

Do you take insurance?

I accept Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Kaiser insurances. Negotiated rates and copays vary, so I recommend checking with your insurance provider for details about your specific plan.
